Why do meal replacement diets work for some people?

Meal replacement diets are becoming very well known as people search for the answer to losing weight. Slim fast is probably the best know one. You replace 2 meals with a sachet mixed with milk and have a small meal for dinner. Kellogg’s Special K has joined the meal replacement idea with their Special K 2 Week Challenge. The lighter life diet is a total meal replacement option where you eat no normal food for the first 8 week phase.

There are others such as the Cambridge diet. To lose weight very fast these full replacement diets are the ones to go for but they do take far more resolve to stay on the diet than Slim fast and the special K challenge.

The Special K challenge is similar to the slim fast diet because you use the breakfast cereal as the meal replacement. You eat a bowl of special k with skim milk and fruit for breakfast. Then you can replace another breakfast type meal with either a special K protein meal bar or more cereal. You then have a low fat calorie counted mal for dinner. You can snack on fresh fruit and vegetables.

These diets work very well but it is what happens after the diet that can create the problems. Because you haven’t learnt any new ways to control normal eating many dieters go back to their old eating patterns and put the weight straight back on. Anytime you eat fewer calories than you have been, you are going to see a drop in your weight. Are they diets that should be used long term? Absolutely not. You might not be getting nearly enough calories or nutrients that your body requires. Also, the ingredients on the slim fast shakes are not as nutritious as the commercials make them sound.

As for the Special K, we know the cereal is good for us, but how about all the new replacement bars that they have came out with? Also with the Special K challenge, it is suppose to be for only two weeks. So what happens when those two weeks are up and you go back to eating regular? The same thing with Slim Fast, you can not stay on that program for the rest of your life so what will happen when you finally stop the program?

The lighter life option is better because they show you in the second half of the program how to transition to ordinary food. You are not left wondering what you should eat. There is a specific re-introduction of food over a 12 week time span that re-educates your body and mind for the future. So these types of diet do work for some people but it is what happens after the meal replacement phase that is critical for long term success.
