The Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet was invented by Dr. R. Atkins in the 1970s.  It is a low carbohydrate diet that uses ketosis to help the body lose the excess weight.  The word Diet is used as a regime of food – new ways and habits that are meant to be adherred to for life.

The diet is based on the body’s own method of making fuel. Basically we take in fuel in the form of food and drink which we turn into energy for our muscles and every day living and working. When we take in more than we use in one day, our body stores this as fat. This may have been great in ages past but in our modern day living and use of processsed foods, our bodies can tend to use the fresh supply and not the stored fats.

Dr. Atkins took the view that since we have too much fat we need to use it. So he designed a diet low in carbohydrates that would encourage our bodies to use up all fats.  This diet is based on the use of “ketosis/lyptolysis” also known as ketosis. When in ketosis, our bodies break down fat into glycerol and free fatty acids which are then broken down into ketone bodies which we can use for fuel/energy.

There are four stages to the Atkins Diet. The Induction, the on-going weight loss, the pre-maintenance, the maintenance.

During the Induction fortnight, the rules are very strict as it is setting the body up for the best results from the diet.  Only 20g of Carbohydrates are allowed (less than a cup full of vegetables). The idea is to reduce the sugar intake and avoid “trigger” foods which encourage the body to eat more than it needs. This is the most difficult phase and often people have headaches and some even feel a little poorly – which really underlines the importance of having a medical as the diet is not suitable for some people, especially those with kidney problems, pregnant ladies, etc. It is also advisable to have some vitamin supplements, etc.  On the induction you can eat all Meat and fish, all shellfish, eggs, cheese but no bread or anything with white flour.

Once through the Induction fortnight you proceed to the on-going weight loss where you lose more weight but can have a wider choice of foods. Excercise is encouraged if you wish but the diet is not based on lots of activity, rather than on how the body uses what you eat. The penultimate stage is to slowly introduce various foods until you find what you are comfortable with – although anything with white flour and refined sugar remains banned.

This diet does seeem to suit diabetics as it’s aim is to stabalise the insulin in the body. It is also reputed to help people with autism and epilepsy as it helps calm the electricity of the brain and has been known to dissolve certain types of kidney stones.

However, as with all diets it is important to seek medical help and do your research to make sure this is the diet for you.  There are always blogs and discussion groups on these sites and e-mails mean experts are only a few moments away.
