The diet claims that you can shed up to 13lbs in only 2 weeks where a big proportion of this will be the fat that surrounds your belly. It’s no wonder at its announcement that this diet took the world by storm. The claim sounds almost unbelievable.

However, it is true. When Dr. Agatston outlined the program, his intention was to help his patients suffering from heart ailments, but he immediately noticed that it also causes rapid weight loss. Given its performance, this doctor gave it world-wide publicity.

This diet works on a different principle to most of the other fad diets. The diet demands consuming the ‘right’ carbohydrates and fats whilst doing away with the wrong ones. So, what are the right ones? In terms of fats, the diet requests unsaturated or alternatively monounsaturated fats whilst with carbohydrates, a low glycaemic index (low GI) constitutes the right stuff! To explain this in terms of actual aliments, olive oil should replace butter and pasta or porridge should take the place of potatoes and white bread in your diet.

The reason why low GI food is preferred is that they are proved to give you energy for a longer time, while high GI foods keep you full only for a very short period of time before hunger returns, thus causing you to eat more than you really need. Hence, foods that are low in GI are crucial if you want to reduce your weight.

And yet this is just one of the recommendations put forth with this regime. It consists of three separate phases. Here are the details about each:

PHASE 1: Eliminate as much carbohydrates as possible. You’re not supposed to eat sweets, pasta, white rice, bread or potatoes. Low GI aliments such as broccoli or cabbage can be consumed in small quantities. At this time the following should not be missing from your plate: fish, eggs, low fat cheese, lean meat and olive oil. If you follow these guidelines, in the couple of weeks that this stage spans over, you will have lost up to thirteen pounds.

PHASE 2: At this point you will not experience slimming as fast as in the first stage of this program, and its span can extend till you lose all the targeted pounds! The average person will now reduce one or two pounds weekly. You are advised to concentrate your meals around aliments low in GI. This can be items such as low-fat milk, pasta, fruit and wholegrain cereal.

PHASE 3: You will be required to stay on this phase for life! That’s because you’ve altered your nutritional habits, which will prevent you from gaining weight. It’s the perk that comes with healthy nutrition.

A great component to this diet is that there are no portion sizes of limits each day which means you won’t be hungry. Therefore, you can eat three meals daily and have nutritious snacks like nuts.

In this case, like for so many other slimming programs, the most difficult time is in the first week, when you need to get your body used to a smaller amount of carbs, which is the main challenge faced when trying to lose weight. Determination is needed to make it through this, and you should also know that during the transition you will experience lethargy.

You should be aware of the fact that only the initial two weeks have an accelerated rate of weight loss. The rest of your target will still be achieved, but possibly at a slower rate so ensure that mentally you are prepared for this.

So there you have it. Instead of offering a fast solution that’ll be followed for a limited time, the South Beach Diet should be embraced as a shift of nutritional habits towards healthier choices. It is true, at first you might follow it to get rid of those extra pounds, but ultimately it is all about improving your lifestyle and overall health.
