Low Calorie Diets And Ketosis

Low calorie diets and ketosis are the means to losing weight.  The average calorie intake for active women is 1940 calories and for active men it is 2550 calories. Modern day living and too much processed foods often means we keep too much of our intake in calories and store them as fats.

Low calorie diets are designed to stimulate ketones which break up the fat stores and reduce our weight.

All good dieting programmes ask that we seek medical advice before following a low calorie diet programme. This is because low calorie diets are most effective if they are supervised and less likely to do us harm.

To lose weight we need to drop our calorie intake by 500 calories for each 1lb weight loss. On average ladies reduce their calorie intake to between 1000 and 1200 calories while men work on about 1500 calories.

Low calorie diets are not meant to be permanent as they can stop being effective. This is because on such a low calorie intake we run the risk of not taking in enough vitamins and other nutrients that our bodies need to function healthily.  This means we must be very selective about the choice of foods we eat and to ensure that we use the body’s metabolic rate to best advantage.  Failure to do this effectivley could mean our bodies go into starvation mode and conserve the very fat we want so much to lose. Instead of feeling full of energy we come very lethargic and run down, thereby becoming more prone to colds and other viruses.

Food on low calorie diets need to be unprocessed and as natural as possible. Ideal food would be Salads with raw carrot, celery, etc., plus low fat protein foods like chicken and fish.  It is also good to reduce salt and replace with herbs and spices (much better at stimulating weight loss).

Activity is the other key to losing weight. This is because for every 1lb of muscle we use about 50 calories.  So doing aerobics, swimming, working out at the local gymn, playing tennis and golf, even walking or running, all contribute to weight loss.

It is the combination of our food and activity choices that will make the most effective use of low calorie diets and ketosis.
