Is there a link between bad breath and ketosis
By Robert | May 20, 2008
When I did the atkins diet 5 years ago and also now on my lighter life diet I was warned that I might suffer from bad breath.
Well I can testify that this was most definitely true with the atkins diet but not so with the lighter life diet. This is strange as ketosis is supposed to cause the bad breath and both these diets use ketosis as the tool for weight loss.
When you are in ketosis you are not supposed to feel hungry. If you do feel hungry this is seen as emotional hunger rather than physical hunger.
If you do have bad breath there is little that you can do as all the cures for bad breath are not allowed on either diet. So it is a case of grin and bear it for you and your nearest and dearest.
Some people use radishes or celery to mask the bad breath but I’m not sure that would be much of an improvement. The thing to do is talk about it so that it is not a hidden issue. If people know it is for the duration of the diet and you also know this then you can just live with it while you are on your very low calorie diet.
