The Three Top Ways to Exercise on a very low calorie diet.

When following a very low calorie diet, it is very hard to exercise. This is because there isn’t a lot of spare energy.  Your body is having to work really hard to process all your body’s fat stores and you will be running out of the energy bursts you need to exercise.  However, you can do what is known as gentle or constant event type exercises.

1. Swimming.

Swimming is a really good exercise.  You are supported in the water so there is no real strain on your joints, regardless of how much you weigh.  You can vary the strokes – so you could do a gentle “breast stroke” or a casual “over arm” stroke – we don’t all have to do a high speed “crawl”!  The benefit of this type of exercise, is that it helps the circulation of blood around your body thus helping you to keep warm, as well as giving your heart and muscles a little work out.

2. Walking.

This can even be a family event.  Many of us have children we could take for a leisurely stroll through the woods or a walk to the local park.  We can walk to work, or to a bus stop further along our route to work. Maybe walk the children to school or walk to town to meet friends. So long as we wear comfortable shoes it should prove very beneficial. An evening stroll before bed can also help the body to warm up before going to sleep and avoid those “cold feet in the bed” moments.

3. Gym Programme.

This last idea will need more planning than the others as you will need to get the advice of a local gym instructor.  Even so it is possible to do a little light exercise.  The important thing is to concentrate on strengthening exercises rather than major running programmes on a treadmill. Muscles continue to use up energy even after exercising is over. A useful approach is to use Warm up exercises.  These are ideal as stretching is a gentle exercise that gets the muscles working and cooling down exercises help them to relax afterwards.

It is by following this gentle but informed approach that you can maximise your weight loss while on a low calorie diet without compromising your health.  When you have lost the excess weight you can develop your exercises and it can be part of your maintenance programme to make sure the extra weight does not return.
