Exercise and weight loss

The very low calorie that I followed did not recommend doing exercise on the diet for a number of reasons.

The main one was that I was taking in only 500 calories per day and this was really only just enough to keep my core system going. I would have been in negative calories if I had gone to the gym or a walk. So for the main part of the diet I did no exercise.

I did suffer from a bit of light headedness anyway which is normal on this type of diet. My work is also quite physical which my diet counsellor said would be enough for me.

Once I entered the second diet phase called route to management I started exercise to start toning my body. In this phase which I have nearly finished you slowly add fruit and vegetables with small amounts of protein over a 12 week period. The exercise was very neccesary for me as all my excess skin needed tightening up and my body was in poor condition.

I go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week and do a short 40 minute program set up for me by the gym. I sometimes add a swim for 10 -20 lengths but that is probably enough. This exercise is not to lose weight but to help my body recover from 20 years of obesity. It is very important not to overdo it. I know other people in my diet group do a lot of walking and jogging but my knees haven’t recovered enough as yet to do this.

For very low calorie diets I do not recommend exercise while you are in the main phase of weight loss. once you start to reintroduce food you can step up the exercise bit by bit. You will need to exercise for life once you have lost all the weight.
