Curtailing Bad Habits: Important Ideas for Lasting Weight Loss

By Robert | April 24, 2009

One of the hardest things many people will ever face is losing weight, especially if it is something they have struggled with over a lifetime. Often, you are your own worst critic, repeating criticisms over and over.

This kind of thinking can get the better of us, and can inhibit our weight loss efforts and worsen the problem. Also overwhelming is the sheer amount of weight loss tips out there.

Don’t let your overly critical inner voice and information overload prevent you from doing anything at all. Try these steps to ease into a more health lifestyle:

1. Focus on one positive change per week.

You probably know from previous efforts to lose weight that trying to change your entire life overnight leads to failure. Choosing one new habit – cutting down your sugar, adding a few days of exercise, getting more fiber, etc. – can help you make more lasting changes.

The best way to do something consistently is to make it a habit. For a new habit to take hold, some say you need to repeat it at least 7 times. Choosing just one habit per week gives your body time to adjust and incorporate the change into your life permanently. One change at a time is manageable, and it is a great way to start. You can always build from there, and you’ll begin to notice results.

2. Take your own advice

If you were advising your good friend on healthy ways to weight loss, would you tell her to stop eating? Would you tell her that she better start spending hours in the gym? Or skip every piece of birthday cake for the rest of her life? Of course not. You would tell her that real weight loss means eating healthy and exercising regularly. It also takes perseverance.

It is hard to take the same advice for yourself, though, because you want results fast. But take a minute to listen to yourself and what you know to be true. Don’t go against your own inner voice and ruin your chances of being successful.
