Burn Fat – Fat Loss vs Weight Loss

It’s important to know that weight loss and fat loss are not exactly the same thing. There is, in fact, a vital and essential difference between the two that you should be aware of if you are planning to lose weight.

Weight loss is the total weight that you lose when you begin a weight loss program. It includes fat, muscle tissue, and fluids. As your body becomes accustomed to the new regimen, the fluids will return. The muscle tissue will not. If you lower your daily caloric intake too much, you will continue to lose muscle. This, of course, is not desirable.

Fat loss the loss of excess body fat as a result of proper nutrition and exercise. The difference between weight loss and fat loss is just one reason why you shouldn’t try to burn fat without learning all that you can about the process. Our knowledge of healthy weight loss has grown dramatically over the last 10 years, and many of the concepts of the early and mid nineties have been found to be faulty.

The prevailing theory back then was to cut calories, and fat grams, to the bare minimum that you could survive on. This theory has been proven to be unsound.  We know now that if caloric intake is cut too drastically, the metabolism slows down, and the body goes into starvation mode. It actually tries to store fat and use lean muscle tissue for energy! The modern fundamental theory now is to eat healthy, natural foods that will help maintain muscle mass, and burn off fat through exercise. (Yeah, I can hear the groans.)

There are a few things you need to know before you get started. You can find calorie calculators online to help you determine your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure). This is the number of calories required in order to maintain your current weight. If you lose more than 2 to 2-1/2 pounds per week you are losing muscle as well as fat. You may be able to lose more fat than that per week if you are extremely obese, but 2 pounds is the general guideline.

We know now that some fats are necessary in order to maintain a healthy body. Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, in particular, are known to have a multitude of health benefits.

A good book on weight loss will supply you with the information you need to determine your daily caloric intake. This will help you burn fat without losing muscle. It will also tell how much fat you should consume each day, as well as good sources of essential fats.

Armed with the right information, you will be able to forever change your eating habits for the better, which is the secret to keeping the weight off after you lose it. More importantly, you will feel better, have more energy, and get sick a lot less.

In summary, the difference between healthy and unhealthy weight loss is knowledge, which be obtained at any library, bookstore, or online. The difference between fat loss and weight loss is muscle, which you want to keep! Go here for more informative articles on how to burn fat the healthy way.
